How Griffin Fast Lube Went from a 3% Open Rate to a Jiffy Lube Marketing Excellence Award: Powered by Shire Marketing and Cinch.
Meet the Players
Griffin Fast Lube is one of the largest Jiffy Lube franchisee groups in the country, operating 65 locations primarily across the western United States.
Shire Marketing is a boutique agency that manages marketing for approximately 225+ Jiffy Lube locations across 15+ franchisees. Bryce Cutler serves as Director of Shire Marketing, overseeing the brand’s customer outreach and digital strategy. Logan Chugg, Account Executive, leads all Cinch strategy and execution on behalf of Griffin and Shire’s other clients.
Cinch is the customer data and experience platform at the center of the story. In Logan’s words: “Cinch is the backbone of our agency.” It powers email, reputation management, segmentation, ad audiences, and attribution — all in one place, connected to a single view of the customer.

Starting from a Very Difficult Place
Every strong results story starts with honest context. Griffin Fast Lube is a sophisticated, well-run operation — but like every multi-location franchise group, they were navigating challenges that no amount of operational excellence alone could solve.
Email deliverability is an industry-wide trap. Without the right tools managing sender reputation, even great email content gets routed to junk. Before Cinch, Griffin’s emails were landing at a 3% open rate — not because the messaging was wrong, but because inbox providers hadn’t been given the right signals to trust the sender.
Franchise POS systems produce messy data by nature. When Griffin moved their customer records into Cinch, the platform automatically cleaned and normalized the data — identifying 4.87 million raw POS records and resolving them down to 2.6 million unique customer identities. That 46.5% duplication rate is entirely typical for multi-location operators pulling data across different systems over many years, and most operators have no idea it’s happening. Duplicate records mean wasted sends, inflated lists, and audiences that look bigger than they really are. Cinch surfaces and solves the problem automatically, so campaigns are reaching real, distinct customers from day one.
Email capture is a known challenge across the Jiffy Lube system. According to Shire’s experience across 225+ locations, as many as two out of three new customers leave without their contact information captured — meaning acquisition spend has no path to retention, no matter how good the marketing.
Fragmented tools make unified strategy nearly impossible. Before consolidating onto Cinch, Shire was managing 16+ separate platforms on Griffin’s behalf — reviews in one place, email in another, scheduling somewhere else. No single view of the customer, no way to connect the dots.
The broader market wasn’t making things easier. Like many quick lube organizations, Jiffy Lube system customer counts have declined year over year as competition grows fiercer — with national chains, independent operators, and dealership service centers all competing for the same customer. Griffin needed a marketing program that could grow the business against that current, not just float with it.
How Shire and Cinch Rebuilt the Engine
Shire didn’t flip a switch. They built a system — layer by layer — and the results reflect that discipline.
Pillar 1: Clean the Foundation First
Before any campaign could perform, the data had to be trustworthy. Cinch resolved Griffin’s 4.87 million raw records down to 2.6 million unique customer identities, deduplicating 46.5% of the database. That cleanup directly improved deliverability, sharpened suppression (so Shire stopped wasting sends on unengaged contacts), and produced cleaner audiences for paid media. Better data made everything downstream better.
Simultaneously, Cinch’s reputation management tools helped rebuild Griffin’s Google Postmaster sender score — the essential step of proving to inbox providers that their emails deserved to land in the primary tab. Before Cinch, Griffin had been flagged by Google and routed almost entirely to junk. Cinch changed that. Without this foundation, nothing else works.
Pillar 2: Email That Actually Gets Opened — and Acted On
With deliverability restored and data cleaned, Shire layered in sophisticated send strategy: segmentation by customer value and behavior, aggressive suppression of low-engagement contacts, and rigorous A/B testing of subject lines, timing, and offer size.
The testing surfaced some clear, actionable findings:
- Subject lines with “Save” or “Coupon” outperform generic messaging by 11–13 percentage points in open rate, and generate nearly 3× the click-through rate.
- Best send times are Tuesday and Wednesday, between 10am and noon local time. Open rates doubled when Shire shifted away from early-morning sends.
- High-value customers (average ticket over $200) are largely coupon-insensitive — they respond better to informational content or loyalty recognition. Lower-value customers respond strongly to discounts. Shire targets each segment accordingly.
The result of all of this: approximately 59–60% open rates and 99% deliverability across 65 locations. For context, the industry average email open rate is 12%. Even Cinch’s own benchmark for mature accounts sits at 50%+, and Griffin exceeds it.
That performance translates directly to revenue. As Bryce put it: “Now more people are opening our emails and we’re seeing a much higher ticket average from those customers.”
Pillar 3: The Sunday Saver — Turning Slow Days into Lines Out the Door
The campaign that best illustrates Shire’s approach is deceptively simple. After identifying Sunday as an underperforming day across Griffin’s locations, Shire built a targeted email campaign around a time-limited offer exclusive to Sunday visits — using Cinch’s segmentation to reach customers most likely to act.
The stores noticed immediately. Logan describes it: “Stores texted me and were like, Logan, what is happening? People are lining up Sunday mornings.”
But the strategy didn’t stop there. For customers who didn’t come in on Sunday, Cinch automatically retargeted them on Monday with a “last chance” version of the same offer, directing them to visit on Wednesday — the next slowest day. The results held:
| Day | Customer Count Lift | Sales Lift |
| Sunday (targeted) | +8% | +11% |
| Wednesday (retargeted) | +8% | +13% |
Critically, these gains did not cannibalize other days of the week. The emails drove incremental visits — people who simply needed a reason and a reminder.
Pillar 4: Reviews Done Right
Before Cinch, Griffin used Podium for review solicitation, averaging about 15 reviews per location at test locations. After switching, review volume began climbing — and hasn’t stopped. By 2025, weekly review averages were 40–65% above the pre-Cinch baseline, and reviews continued growing 5–15% year-over-year even as total customer counts declined system-wide.
What makes the approach work is intentional restraint. Shire delays review requests to avoid catching customers in a reactive moment after their visit. Coupons are included at the bottom of the review email as goodwill — not gated to leaving a review, but present as a thank-you. Timing, tone, and sequencing matter as much as the ask itself. The result: higher volume and higher average star ratings.
Pillar 5: Operations and Marketing as One Team
One of the most important drivers of Griffin’s success is what Cinch makes visible: the direct connection between data quality and marketing performance. Cinch gave Shire the reporting and intelligence to show store operations exactly what better email capture was worth — and that data became the business case for getting everyone aligned.
If two out of three new customers leave without their information captured, every retargeting campaign, every reminder, every loyalty email reaches a smaller and smaller share of the actual customer base. Shire has worked to change that at Griffin — and the $150 ROI per dollar spent on Cinch is a direct function of having better data to work with. When the platform gets the inputs it needs, the outputs follow.
Results That Earned an Award
The 2026 Jiffy Lube Marketing Excellence Award doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Here’s what it reflects:
- 3% → 60% email open rate — from flagged by Google and buried in junk, to one of the highest-performing email programs in the quick lube industry.
- $150 ROI for every dollar spent on Cinch — driven by smarter suppression, sharper segmentation, and operational alignment on data capture.
- 27 million emails sent in a single year for Griffin alone, at 99% deliverability and less than 1% bounce.
- Sunday customer counts up ~8%, Sunday sales up ~11% since the Super Saver Sunday campaign launched.
- Wednesday customer counts up ~8%, Wednesday sales up ~13% from retargeted follow-up — with no meaningful cannibalization of other days.
- 46.5% deduplication rate — 2.26 million duplicate records resolved, sharpening every downstream audience and campaign.
- Review volume 40–65% above the pre-Cinch baseline in 2025, continuing to grow year-over-year despite declining industry-wide customer counts.
- Reviews up 5% in the most recent year — even as the broader Jiffy Lube system saw customer counts fall.
What’s Next
The award marks a milestone, not a finish line. Shire and Griffin are already focused on the next layer of the platform:
- SMS expansion. Shire has seen strong email performance but hasn’t yet fully leveraged texting. Scaling SMS campaigns — particularly for time-sensitive promotions — is a top priority.
- Smarter ad audiences. Using Cinch’s audience tools to suppress already-loyal customers from paid media campaigns (eliminating wasted spend) and to build fleet-specific outreach through direct mail integrations.
The transformation at Griffin Fast Lube — from flagged sender to award-winning marketing program — is a story about what happens when the right platform meets the right agency and both are committed to doing the work at every level: cleaning data, rebuilding reputation, testing relentlessly, and getting store operations aligned with marketing goals.
